What is The Harmony Prenatal Test?
The Harmony Prenatal test is a Non Invasive Prenatal Test (NIPT) for Down’s syndrome (Trisomy 21) and similar chromosomal conditions.
It assesses free fetal DNA which is present in the mothers blood circulation. The laboratory techniques will extract the fetal DNA from a simple blood test from the mother.
It has over 99% accuracy in detecting Down's syndrome (trisomy 21) in addition to Edward's syndrome (trisomy 18), and Patau's syndrome (trisomy 13) without the risk of miscarriage.
At the Aster Baby Scan Clinic it is performed by Dr Bamfo and we work The Doctors Laboratory (TDL) to provide the Harmony Prenatal test to our mums to be.
Who is it suitable for?
Mums to be wanting the most accurate screening test for Down's syndrome
Mums to be are often told about the combined test (nuchal translucency and biochemistry testing ) for Down's syndrome. This is the test that is oftern offered in the NHS. An alternative is the Harmony test which is a more accurate test. The combined test has a detection rate for Down's syndrome of around 85% but the Harmony test has a detection rate of 99% plus.
If it has not been possible to measure the nuchal translucency at the NHS scan
Mums to be can have the Harmony test if the sonographers have not been able to measure the nuchal transclucency.
The nuchal translucency can be difficult if the baby is not in the right position. Dr Bamfo can perform the nuchal translucency but mums to be can also opt to have the Harmony test.
Mums to be that have been offered the Quadruple test for Down/s syndrome only but wish to be tested for Edwards syndrome and Patau's syndrome.
Mums to be that have been offered a Quadruple (Quad) test to asesses the risk of Down’s syndrome but want to be assessed for Edward's syndrome (trisomy 18), and Patau's syndrome (trisomy 13) as well can have the Harmony test. The Harmony NIPT test assesses for the risk for all the three trisomies 21, 18 and 13.
Read more about the Harmony Test also speak to your doctor or midwife about it. It can be performed from 10 weeks. You can also get more information from ARC (antenatal
